TOKYO, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower Thursday with the benchmark Nikkei index shedding nearly 3 percent to close at an eight-month low, amid growing uncertainty of the world economy following the U.S. announcement of reciprocal tariffs.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 989.94 points, or 2.77 percent, from Wednesday at 34,735.93, its lowest closing since Aug. 6, after briefly losing over 4 percent.

The broader Topix index finished 81.68 points, or 3.08 percent, lower at 2,568.61.

On the stock market, caution prevailed with investors unloading stocks as uncertainty lingers on prospects of the Japanese and overseas economies, including the United States, following the U.S. decision to impose reciprocal tariffs, dealers said.

The U.S. dollar briefly weakened to a three-week low in the upper 146 yen zone in Tokyo as the yen was bought amid concerns over the economic outlook following the latest U.S. tariff move.
