ALMATY, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Construction has begun on Kazakhstan's largest polyethylene production plant, Silleno, in the National Industrial Petrochemical Technopark special economic zone in Atyrau Region, Kazinform news agency reported on Monday.
The foundation piles for the plant were laid on the same day.
The plant, designed to produce 1.25 million tons of polyethylene annually, is being built with an investment of over 7 billion U.S. dollars. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, with production set to begin in 2029.
Silleno will be a key project in Kazakhstan's manufacturing sector, capable of producing more than 20 types of polyethylene used in various industries. The plant's products will be exported to Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, Europe, China, and Turkey.
The plant is expected to replace around 90 percent of Kazakhstan's polyethylene imports. According to the Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan, the domestic polyethylene market stood at 300 thousand tons in 2024 and is projected to grow to 400 thousand tons by 2035. The majority of this demand will be met by Silleno's production. ■
