BAGHDAD, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani held a phone conversation with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Tuesday, discussing Syria's political process and bilateral ties.
During the conversation, al-Sudani stressed the importance of ensuring Syria's political process includes all components of society and that it moves toward peaceful coexistence and social stability, so as to establish a secure future for the country and the whole region, according to a statement from his media office.
Al-Sudani congratulated al-Sharaa on forming Syria's new transitional government, reaffirming Iraq's steadfast position in support of the Syrian people's choices.
He reiterated Iraq's rejection of Israel's incursions into Syrian territory and its support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria without any foreign interventions, said the statement.
In addition, al-Sudani emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation in combating threats posed by the Islamic State terrorist group. He also called for strengthening economic collaboration, given the shared opportunities and common factors between the two countries, it added.
For his part, al-Sharaa affirmed his commitment to developing bilateral ties, stressing his respect for Iraq's sovereignty and his rejection of interferences in Iraq's internal affairs, according to a statement by his office.
Al-Sharaa also highlighted the importance of continued coordination to confront common challenges and to strengthen and institutionalize political relations between the two neighbors. ■
