WINDHOEK, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has introduced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital chest X-ray technology to enhance tuberculosis (TB) screening and improve early diagnosis, Minister of Health and Social Services Esperance Luvindao said on Friday.

Speaking at an event in the country's northern region of Omusati to mark World TB Day, which falls on March 24 each year, Luvindao said the technology aims to optimize TB detection and reduce the burden on healthcare workers.

"I experienced this technology earlier today when I was screened by the team. I call upon all of you to get screened," she said. "We will support the expansion of AI-aided digital X-ray screening to find more TB cases in the community and health facilities."

Namibia is among the 11 countries with the highest TB incidence rates globally, Luvindao said, adding that her ministry has expanded access to rapid diagnostics and introduced shorter treatment regimens to improve patient outcomes.

The newly appointed minister said the country is strengthening public-private partnerships and rolling out community-based care models to ensure that TB treatment reaches all regions, while acknowledging the support of international partners, including the World Health Organization and the Global Fund.

As part of its commitment to tackling TB, Namibia will host the second Conference on Innovations in Tuberculosis on May 12, followed by the International Conference on HIV Treatment, Pathogenesis, and Prevention Research from May 13 to 16 in Windhoek, the country's capital.

The government will continue to pursue partnerships and mobilize funding to support TB prevention and treatment efforts, Luvindao added.
