MADRID, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Four Real Madrid players are being investigated by UEFA for "indecent conduct" following their penalty shoot-out win against Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League in Atletico's Metropolitano Stadium.
Real Madrid snuck through after the shootout where Julian Alvarez's spot kick was controversially disallowed due to a VAR decision that he had touched the ball twice, and Marcos Llorente then hit his penalty against the bar to see Real Madrid into the quarterfinals and spark wild celebrations from their players.
Atletico sent videos of their rivals' behavior to UEFA, who have responded with a statement.
"A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Daniel Ceballos Fernandez and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025," read the communique.
The most serious allegations are thought to be against Rudiger, who made a throat-slitting gesture to the Atletico supporters, while Mbappe was filmed grabbing his groin in an apparent gesture.
Real Madrid will face Arsenal in the quarterfinals, but it's not yet certain if the investigation would lead to any suspensions or just a fine if the players are found guilty. ■
