VIENTIANE, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Laos held an event to celebrate ASEAN Social Work Day 2025, honoring the crucial role of social workers and welfare personnel in disaster risk reduction and building resilience to climate change.
The event, titled "The Role of Social Workers and the Wider Social Service Workforce in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Resilience," highlighted the profession's expanding role in humanitarian and climate response efforts, Lao National Radio reported on Thursday.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Dexanourath Seneduangdeth, acting president of the National University of Laos, said that this event serves as an important platform to strengthen cooperation, develop policies, and enhance social welfare efforts to contribute to disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
Laos is in the process of drafting its first social work law, which is expected to be adopted by the end of this year. The law aims to develop the social welfare profession and ensure the provision of high-quality services.
Additionally, the National University of Laos has updated its Bachelor of Social Work curriculum to include topics on disaster risk reduction and climate change, preparing students to address the challenges of climate change and social vulnerability. ■
