WINDHOEK, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's National Olympic Committee (NNOC) and Commonwealth Sports President, Ndeulipula Hamutumwa, on Monday hailed the election of Kirsty Coventry as the new head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Hamutumwa said in a statement that the development is a landmark moment that promises increased support for African nations and more minor sporting powers like Namibia.

"This is a proud moment for Africa. With Coventry's leadership, we anticipate more investment in sports development that will benefit the entire continent," he said.

According to Hamutumwa, Coventry's election as IOC president is a defining moment for the sport.

"As an olympian and leader, she deeply understands athlete needs, governance, and global sports development. Her leadership promises to drive progress, inclusivity, and continued growth for the Olympic Movement," he said.

For Namibia, a smaller nation often facing resource constraints, Coventry's presidency offers hope for enhanced support through Olympic solidarity programs, said Hamutumwa.

"We are hopeful that the programs will continue to strengthen. Her leadership presents an opportunity for all nations, big or small," he said.

Hamutumwa reflected on the significance of Coventry's election as the first female IOC president and drew a parallel with Namibia's milestone.

"It highlights the growing representation of women in leadership, inspiring young girls across Africa to believe that they too can lead at the highest level," he said.

Meanwhile, the NNOC looks forward to working closely with Coventry and the IOC in advancing sport.

Coventry, a Zimbabwean by birth, is a decorated Olympian and experienced sports administrator, who became the first African and female leader of the Olympic Movement.
