BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on Thursday, targeting areas deep in eastern and southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported that in eastern Lebanon, Israeli warplanes struck the outskirts of Taraya village, west of Baalbek, and the al-Shaara area near Janta, at the foothills of the eastern mountain range.

In southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes hit the area between Jbaa and Snaya with four missiles, the report added.

Israel's military confirmed the strikes, saying they were targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and rocket launchers.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) struck a military site containing an underground infrastructure site in the Beqaa (Valley) area in Lebanon," the military said in a statement. Another Hezbollah site, containing rocket launchers in southern Lebanon, was also struck, it added.

The attack was the latest in a string of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon over the past months, despite a fragile ceasefire in place since November last year and as Israel renewed deadly bombardments in Gaza, shattering a two-month truce with Hamas.
