OTTAWA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Canada's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.6 percent in February year over year, following an increase of 1.9 percent in January, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The end of the goods and services tax as well as harmonized sales tax break partway through the month contributed notable upward pressure to prices for eligible products, said the national statistical agency.

While faster price growth was broad-based in February, slower price growth for gasoline prices moderated the all-items CPI acceleration, said the agency, adding that on a monthly basis, the CPI rose 1.1 percent in February.

The imposition of tariffs by the United States and/or countermeasure tariffs by the Canadian government will have an impact on prices paid by Canadian consumers in the coming months, said Statistics Canada.
