JAKARTA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso expressed concern on Tuesday that Indonesia could become a target of U.S. import tariff policies.

According to data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency, Indonesia recorded a trade surplus of 1.57 billion U.S. dollars with the United States in February 2025.

"Our exports are substantial, while our imports from the U.S. are relatively modest," Santoso told reporters.

The minister noted the possibility of reciprocal tariffs from the United States and said that his team is evaluating appropriate measures to address the situation.

Santoso expressed confidence that Indonesia's current position remains secure, but emphasized that he is closely monitoring the U.S. government's latest tariff policy, which is expected to be finalized soon.

"The U.S. is focusing on countries with the largest trade deficits. Indonesia ranks 15th, which is significant. For now, we are safe, but we are awaiting the announcement of the tariffs, scheduled for April 2," Santoso said.

He stressed the importance of maintaining strong trade relations with the United States, ensuring that Indonesian products have a secure market in the U.S. and that American products are similarly protected in Indonesia.
