JAKARTA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia plans to expand its crude oil refinery capacity to 1 million barrels per day across 16 locations, a significant increase from the previously planned 500,000 barrels per day at a single location, according to the National Energy Downstreaming and Resilience Task Force.
This decision was made following a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and the Task Force at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday evening, with the goal of accelerating national energy downstreaming.
"The oil refineries will be spread across Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua to promote equitable energy infrastructure," said Bahlil Lahadalia, head of the Task Force.
To enhance national energy supply resilience, the government will also construct a 1 million barrel-per-day oil storage tank on Pulau Nipah, Batam.
Previously, Prabowo has approved a proposal for 21 downstreaming projects worth 659.2 trillion rupiah (around 40 billion U.S. dollars) in the mining, oil and gas, and renewable energy sectors.
These priority projects include the construction of oil refineries, coal gasification into dimethyl ether (DME), and mineral processing for commodities such as copper, nickel, and bauxite. ■
