OSLO, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, held its parliamentary election on Tuesday.

Over 40,420 eligible voters were able to cast their ballots at 72 polling stations across the territory. Polling stations opened at 9 a.m. local time (1100 GMT) and will close at 8 p.m. local time.

A total of 31 members will be elected to the Inatsisartut, Greenland's parliament, from among 213 candidates representing six political parties.

The composition of the new autonomous government will be determined based on the election results. Mute Egede, Greenlandic prime minister and leader of the Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, described the election as a "decisive moment" for the island's future.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen sent her greetings via social media, saying, "I wish everyone in Greenland a very good election day."

In an interview published on Monday with Danish broadcaster DR, Egede said his immediate priority following the election, should he remain in power, will be to reaffirm Greenland's sovereignty.

"Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, no matter how many times the U.S. president claims he wants control over it," Egede asserted.

Since early this year, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to obtain Greenland, even suggesting the possibility of using force.
