INDIAN WELLS, California, March 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Wang Xinyu progressed to the third round of the WTA 1000 event at Indian Wells on Friday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko.
Despite combining seven aces with six double faults, world No. 42 Wang won 76 percent of points on her first serve to prevail in an hour and 27 minutes.
Ostapenko, who is ranked 26th, lacked sharpness following her first round bye. The 27-year-old put just 49 percent of her first serves in play and converted just one of four break points.
Aiming for her first WTA singles title, 23-year-old Wang will meet American world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the third round.
The winner of this year's edition will earn 1.2 million U.S. dollars and 1000 ranking points. ■
