MOSCOW, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday cautioned those opposing Russia by invoking French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's failure to conquer Russia some 200 years ago.

Speaking at a meeting with employees and beneficiaries of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation, Putin said: "There are still people who want to go back to the times of Napoleon, forgetting how it ended."

Putin's remarks came after recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron. In a televised speech on Wednesday, Macron said that Russia poses a threat to France and Europe, announcing that he would consider sending European troops to Ukraine to help enforce a peace deal.

Napoleon invaded Russia in June 1812, and was forced into a winter retreat with heavy casualties later that year.
