DAKAR, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Senegal has assumed the rotating presidency of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) for the next two years (2025-2027), succeeding Egypt, according to an official source in Dakar on Monday.
Senegal's Minister of Water and Sanitation Cheikh Tidiane Dieye was officially installed as the new president of the council following the 6th extraordinary session of AMCOW's Executive Committee, held online on Monday, the ministry said in a statement.
According to the statement, the appointment is part of AMCOW's ongoing efforts to improve integrated water resources management and support the objectives of the African Union's Agenda 2063, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"This appointment also demonstrates Senegal's continued commitment to sustainable and equitable water resource management, aiming to ensure universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation across the continent," the statement added, highlighting Senegal's role as a key player in upcoming international events.
AMCOW was established in 2002 in Abuja, Nigeria, with the primary goal of promoting cooperation, security, social and economic development, and poverty eradication in member states through effective water resource management and water supply service delivery. ■
