JERUSALEM, March 3 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and four others were wounded in a stabbing attack in the northern Israeli city of Haifa on Monday morning, said the Israeli police.
A knife-wielding man arrived at Merkazit HaMifratz, the central bus station in Haifa, and began stabbing people, the police said in a statement, describing the incident as "a terror attack."
The suspect was shot and killed at the scene, the police said, without providing further details.
Magen David Adom rescue service said medics pronounced the death of a man in his 70s. Three other people -- a man and a woman in their 30s and a 15-year-old boy -- were taken to hospital and were in serious condition. A woman in her 70s sustained moderate injuries, it said.
Israel's state-owned Kan TV reported that police were investigating whether one of the injured was mistakenly shot by gunfire directed at the assailant.
The attack came amid an ongoing Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank, where dozens have been killed and widespread damage has been reported. Meanwhile, talks have appeared to stall on the second phase of a fragile ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. ■
