COLOMBO, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has frozen criminal assets worth 22.4 million U.S. dollars (6.6 billion rupees) from December 2024 to January 2025, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala told parliament on Friday.
He revealed that among the confiscated assets, 15.25 million dollars worth of assets belonged to drug traffickers. The government has also seized substantial assets from those who made money through pyramid schemes and financial crimes, he said.
The National People's Power government, which came into power in 2024, is committed to the elimination of organized crime and is formulating laws that can effectively deal with organized criminal groups and extremist organizations, he said. ■
