JAKARTA, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced on Wednesday that 4,834 families whose homes were flooded in 15 villages in Gresik Regency, East Java, have received assistance.
"Prolonged heavy rainfall caused the Lamong and Surabaya rivers to overflow, resulting in flooding in various Gresik Regency areas," said Abdul Muhari, head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Communication Center.
Since early Tuesday, floodwaters have drowned 194 hectares of rice farms, six educational buildings, two health facilities, and 13 intercity routes, reaching heights of 20 to 100 centimeters.
Muhari added that no fatalities have been reported so far and that residents are being evacuated at various points.
The quick response team continues to undertake field inspections to ensure that people's requirements are satisfied, such as distributing logistics assistance and checking water levels.
BNPB asked people to remain attentive and follow authorities' recommendations, as well as to move to safer areas if flood levels rise and pose a threat. ■
