TOKYO, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Nationwide sales at Japan's department stores rose 5.2 percent year-on-year in January, driven by strong demand for lucky bags and purchases by foreign tourists, industry data showed.

According to the Japan Department Stores Association, total sales for January reached approximately 480.5 billion yen (about 3.2 billion U.S. dollars).

While 46 stores nationwide delayed their first sales day and increased holiday closures, demand remained strong, particularly for food-packed lucky bags, artworks and jewelry.

Additionally, sales were boosted by increased spending from foreign tourists, especially during the Chinese New Year. Duty-free sales surged 54.9 percent year-on-year to 61.9 billion yen, marking the highest January total on record.
