HELSINKI, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Swedish authorities are investigating another incident of suspected underwater cable damage in the Baltic Sea, Swedish Television reported Friday.

The suspected cable damage happened off the Swedish island of Gotland in the southern Baltic Sea, said the report, adding that the Finnish data communications company Cinia announced that it concerns their data cable C-Lion1, which runs between Finland and Germany.

A preliminary investigation has now been initiated by the Swedish Prosecution Authority, with the coastguard assisting. The investigation has been confirmed by the Swedish Coastguard.

The coastguard said that it is unclear when the suspected cable break occurred, but the authority has been aware of it since Thursday night.

The cable damage should not cause major problems for users, as it still functions despite being damaged, said Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on social media X that he has been aware of the new cable break in the Baltic Sea and is taking the situation very seriously.

A ship of the Swedish Coastguard was on its way to the location on Friday morning, according to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

This is the latest of several incidents in which underwater cables have been damaged in the Baltic Sea.
