COLOMBO, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Six wild elephants were killed and two others injured on Thursday morning when the herd was hit by a train heading for the capital Colombo from Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka, the police said.
The police said the accident took place near the Gal Oya railway station in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.
The train engine was derailed in the accident, but no passenger was injured, the police said.
In a similar accident on the same rail line last October, two elephants were killed, and several others were critically injured. ■
