RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese manager Vasco Matos has reached an agreement to take charge of Botafogo on a two-year deal, according to media reports in Brazil.
The Rio de Janeiro club agreed to pay one million euros to activate a release clause in the 44-year-old's contract with Portuguese top-flight club Santa Clara, news outlet O Globo reported on Tuesday.
It added that only "bureaucratic details" stood in the way of Matos signing a contract that runs until December 2026.
Botafogo has been without a manager since Artur Jorge departed to join Qatar's Al-Rayyan in January.
The reigning Brazilian and South American champion has since been managed on an interim basis by Claudio Cacapa, who is expected to return to his former role as an assistant.
Matos is considered one of the best young managers in Europe having led Santa Clara to Portugal's second division title last year and fifth in the current top-flight standings. ■
