ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has officially opened its Africa office in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

The office, located on the premises of Addis Ababa University, will bring together innovative thinkers and technical experts from around the world to address challenges hindering sustainable development in Africa, the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday.

The Addis Ababa office will also conduct research and provide policymakers with scientifically-backed solutions. It will also offer diverse training to develop a skilled workforce in the sector.

Speaking at the inaugural event, SDSN President Jeffrey Sachs said the office will help unite innovative thinkers to collaboratively tackle challenges in sustainable development, leveraging diverse expertise for lasting social and environmental solutions.

The network's primary goal is to achieve economic prosperity and social justice globally. Sachs emphasized the importance of supporting governments in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, urging universities and other stakeholders to focus on developing and sharing solutions.

He highlighted the office's aim to make the SDSN's resources accessible across Africa.

The inaugural event of the office was attended by Ethiopia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide, and other government officials.
