JAKARTA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia plans to build 63,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by 2030 to accommodate the expected increase in EVs to 943,000 units that year, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced on Tuesday.
According to data from state energy company PT PLN, Indonesia currently has 3,233 charging stations across various locations.
"The expansion of charging stations aims to reduce reliance on imported fuel, lower carbon emissions, and accelerate the transition to renewable energy," said Jisman Hutajulu, the ministry's director general of electricity.
Indonesia's national fuel consumption currently averages 1.4 million barrels per day, while domestic production supports only about 600,000 barrels. The addition of EV charging stations is expected to save the country up to 66,000 barrels per day.
The increased adoption of EVs and charging infrastructure is also projected to cut CO2 emissions by up to one million tonnes annually while providing economic benefits, Jisman added. ■
