COLOMBO, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology announced on Tuesday that the heat index is expected to reach the "Caution Level" on Wednesday in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western and Southern Provinces, as well as in Monaragala and Ratnapura districts.
The department warned that prolonged sun exposure and physical activity could lead to heat cramps. The public is advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade and limit strenuous outdoor activities.
Officials also urged people to check on the elderly and sick, avoid leaving children unattended in vehicles, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing during the day.
A meteorologist noted on Saturday that Sri Lanka could experience higher-than-usual temperatures in March and April 2025.
The country has been experiencing dry weather in recent weeks, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s degrees Celsius in most areas. ■
