RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- World No. 12 Holger Rune has withdrawn from the ATP 500 Rio Open due to injury, tournament organizers said on Friday.
The 21-year-old Dane was one of the favorites to win South America's biggest tournament, to be played on the outdoor clay of the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro from February 17 to 23.
"Holger Rune will unfortunately not be playing at the Rio Open 2025. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you soon," the Rio Open said on its official social media accounts, without providing details of the injury.
The announcement came less than a day after Rune exited the ATP 250 Argentina Open with a shock loss to unseeded Mariano Navone in the round of 16.
The Rio Open draw will be led by World No. 2 Alexander Zverev and also includes Lorenzo Musetti, Francisco Cerundolo, Nicolas Jarry, Alejandro Tabilo, Sebastian Baez, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Joao Fonseca. ■
