KABUL, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A total of 42 couples got married at a mass wedding party in Afghanistan's capital city Kabul on Thursday, local media Tolonews reported Friday.
A local charity organized the ceremony for the 42 couples here, helping low-income couples avoid the high cost of a traditional wedding, the report said. The foundation also provided household appliances for the newlyweds.
Unemployment, the economic crisis, and the high cost of lavish dowries and expensive gifts often force young people to wait for years to hold their wedding ceremonies in impoverished countries.
The Afghan caretaker government has called on people to prevent irrational marriage customs and avoid wasting unnecessary money on wedding ceremonies. ■
