KABUL, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security personnel have seized a large quantity of weapons and ammunition in the northern Takhar province, the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement late Wednesday.
The contraband, which included Kalashnikovs, rocket launchers, grenades, and an amount of ammunition, including PK machine gun bullets and mortar shells, was discovered during a series of discovery and operations in the Kharmab region, Farkhar district of the province, according to the statement.
Without providing more details about when the confiscated weapons and ammunition were seized, the statement added that security personnel had begun efforts to pursue and capture an individual suspected of fleeing the scene of the incident.
Since assuming power in August 2021, the Afghan caretaker government has rounded up thousands of arms and a huge quantity of ammunition as part of efforts to stabilize the security situation across the war-ravaged Central Asian country. ■
