TOKYO, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Japan's stock market closed trading Monday mixed as investors remained cautious amid concerns over U.S. trade policy, along with rising domestic interest rates and speculation of an early rate hike by the Bank of Japan.
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, closed at 38,801.17, up 14.15 points, or 0.04 percent from the previous day.
After opening lower due to concerns over U.S. stock market declines and tariff policies, the index gradually recovered, supported by selective buying of stocks following earnings reports.
The Nikkei briefly rose over 100 points in the afternoon but lacked strong momentum as concerns over the U.S. tariff policy weighed on sentiment.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) declined for a second consecutive session, closing down 4.22 points, or 0.15 percent at 2,733.01.
On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, advancing stocks outnumbered losers 812 to 778, while 50 stocks remained unchanged. ■
