GENEVA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A new report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reveals a significant shift in global transportation innovation towards cleaner technologies.
The report, titled "WIPO Technology Trends: The Future of Transportation," shows that China, Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Germany are leading this surge in technological advancement.
According to the report, which analyzed over 1.1 million patents published since 2000, the transportation sector is experiencing an 11 percent compound annual growth rate in future technologies.
This rate is more than double the average growth seen across all global patent filings.
The findings underscore the importance of transportation innovations, especially in a sector that contributes between 6 percent and 12 percent of GDP in many countries and is responsible for roughly 23 percent of annual energy-related carbon emissions.
One notable trend is the explosive growth of future transportation patents, which have multiplied sevenfold over two decades, from 15,000 inventions in 2003 to 120,000 in 2023. ■
