ROME, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least seven mobile subscribers in Italy have been targeted by spyware through their use of the WhatsApp messaging platform, a subsidiary of U.S.-based Meta Platforms, authorities said on Wednesday.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has tasked the National Cybersecurity Agency with investigating the matter, her office said in a statement.
At least two of the seven affected individuals -- including a journalist and the founder of a humanitarian group -- have publicly commented on the situation.
Meloni's office said that WhatsApp users in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, among others had also been targeted. ■
