JERUSALEM, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Israel has successfully completed an operational test launch of the Gabriel 5 sea-to-sea missile, the Israeli Defense Ministry and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a joint statement on Thursday.
The Gabriel 5 is a long-range missile capable of reaching hundreds of kilometers in varying sea and air conditions. It can intercept and destroy a wide range of targets and threats, according to the statement.
The test launch was carried out by soldiers of the Israeli Navy's missile ship flotilla, the Defense Ministry's Directorate of Defense Research and Development, and the state-run Israel Aerospace Industries company that manufactures the missile.
During the test, the system successfully carried out detection and firing processes, simulating real scenarios, the statement noted.
It further added that the success of this test strengthens the navy's combat capabilities and enhances its readiness for operational challenges. ■
