ASUNCION, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Paraguay international defender Pedro Sarabia has been appointed head coach of nine-time Paraguayan champions Club Nacional, the Asuncion-based side said on Monday.

The 49-year-old replaces Argentine Victor Bernay, who was sacked after a 3-1 loss to Cerro Porteno on Saturday.

"Pedro Sarabia returns to Nacional and is the new head coach of the Academy. We're going all in. Welcome and best of luck, professor," read a statement on Nacional's social media pages.

Sarabia, who was capped 47 times for Paraguay's national team before turning to coaching in 2013, has been out of work since parting ways with Sportivo Ameliano last August.

It will be his second spell in charge of Nacional following an 18-month stint in 2022 and 2023.

Nacional are currently last in the 12-team top-flight standings with just one point from the first three games of the season.

Sarabia will be in Nacional's dugout for the home Copa Libertadores qualifier against Alianza Lima on Wednesday.
