LIMA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Peru national team captain Paolo Guerrero said Monday that he is likely to retire from professional football at the end of the current season.

The 41-year-old is tied to Peruvian top-flight side Alianza Lima until December and he has all but ruled out the possibility of a contract extension.

"Yes, it [retirement] is very likely," Guerrero told reporters. "I will analyze it at the end of the year but I'm 41 years old."

Despite coming to the realization that his playing days will soon end, Guerrero said he was injury-free for the first time in recent memory.

"I didn't think I'd get to this age and feel like I do," he said. "I had a good pre-season - my first in four years - and I'm looking forward to a good year."

Guerrero is expected to start in Alianza Lima's away Copa Libertadores qualifier against Paraguay's Nacional on Wednesday.

Peru's all-time leading scorer with 39 goals from 124 international matches, Guerrero began his professional career at Bayern Munich before having spells at Hamburg, Corinthians, Flamengo and Internacional, among other clubs.

He announced his retirement from international football in January.
