RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Bruno Henrique scored twice as Flamengo secured their third Brazilian Super Cup on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Botafogo.
Henrique opened the scoring from the penalty spot at the Mangueirao stadium after he was brought down by Alexander Barboza.
With 15 minutes gone, referee Ramon Abatti halted the match due to heavy rain that left large sections of the pitch under water.
Play resumed more than an hour later and Henrique doubled the lead almost immediately with a sublime first-time effort from the edge of the 18-yard box after Michael Oliveira's pass on the counterattack.
Luiz Araujo made it 3-0 when he pounced on a defensive error and dribbled into the box before deftly lifting his shot over the onrushing goalkeeper John Furtado.
Patrick de Paula reduced the deficit with an 87th-minute strike but it proved little more than a consolation as Flamengo secured Brazilian football's first major trophy of the year.
Botafogo qualified for the match as the reigning Brazilian Serie A champions while Flamengo earned a place by winning last year's Copa do Brasil. Flamengo also won the Super Cup in 2020 and 2021. ■
