ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party (PP) on Sunday re-elected the country's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as its president during the party's ongoing second congress, the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has disclosed.

The congress, which started Friday in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, re-elected Abiy "with a significant number of votes," while the country's Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh and Vice President of the PP Adem Farah were elected as vice presidents, the party said. The elected party leaders took the oath of office during the congress in accordance with the party's directives.

"Today, we conducted Prosperity Party's election, embracing technology as part of our national journey toward digital transformation," Abiy said on X, formerly Twitter. "The trust and responsibility entrusted to me and the deputy presidents through this re-election inspires us to move forward with renewed commitment."

Addressing the opening session of the congress on Friday, Abiy reiterated that the PP has delivered its promises by transforming the country's economy and promoting inclusivity. He said the party has emerged as a leader in political and economic reform, emphasizing the importance of innovation and engagement in addressing Ethiopia's long-standing issues.

Abiy underscored the importance of the party congress in evaluating progress, formulating new strategies, and electing capable leaders.
