LONDON, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Wolverhampton Wanderers' battle to avoid relegation received a major boost with the news that Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha has signed a new contract until 2029.

The news means Wolves has held off interest from several clubs, including Arsenal to keep the 25-year-old striker, who has scored 11 goals in 23 Premier League games for the club this season and is arguably the main factor in keeping it out of the bottom three.

"Matheus has been on an incredible journey with us over the past two years, and it has been an honor to see him become an integral part of the family. Matheus has great relationships with everyone; his personality is contagious, and we hope this new contract will propel the group forward," commented club president Jeff Shi.

"We all see his quality on the pitch, but off it, he has become a leader within the squad, and we are delighted he has signed a new deal," added Shi.

Cunha has a total of 27 goals and 13 assists in 80 appearances since joining Wolves from Atletico Madrid at the end of 2022.

The striker celebrated his new deal in style on Saturday as he curled in his side's second goal in a 2-0 win at home to Aston Villa. The win ended a run of four consecutive defeats for Wolves and leaves it two points above the relegation zone.
