NAIROBI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's active mobile phone subscriptions grew by 1.6 percent to reach 70 million as of September 2024, up from 68.9 million by June 2024, according to a report released Friday by the country's communication industry regulator.
According to the quarterly report by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA), Kenya's mobile phone penetration rate reached 135.8 percent, underscoring the telecommunications sector which demonstrated overall growth in the quarter under review.
"Mobile phone subscriptions grew, reflecting the sector's continued expansion and adaptation to consumer demands," the CA said in the report on information and communications technology service performance and trends.
According to the report, mobile money subscriptions also saw an increase, rising to 40.6 million by September.
While 3G broadband subscriptions and data usage declined, the report highlighted a marked shift toward higher-speed networks, with increased adoption of 4G and 5G technologies. Mobile data subscriptions reached a record 53.7 million as of September, with 4G networks accounting for 58.1 percent of the total.
The findings pointed to significant advancements in 4G and 5G uptake, driven by growing consumer demand for high-speed connectivity and sustained investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
The industry regulator said that demand for high-speed internet for streaming, online learning, remote work, and e-commerce has been the primary driver behind the increased adoption of advanced network technologies. ■
