COLOMBO, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives will require an additional 450 megawatts of power to support President Mohamed Muizzu's objective of increasing the country's renewable energy generation rate to 33 percent by 2028, the official PSM News said on Wednesday.

The report, quoting Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, said the current administration's goal of generating 33 percent of the nation's energy from renewable sources will be accomplished within five years.

Upon taking office in November 2023, Muizzu inherited a renewable energy generation capacity of 53 megawatts. This capacity has since been augmented to 70 megawatts during the administration's first year, Ibrahim said.

Studies indicated that the government must establish an additional 450 megawatts of energy generation capacity from renewable sources by November 2028 to achieve the 33 percent goal, PSM said.

The minister also revealed that projects were currently in progress nationwide, aiming to establish 170 megawatts of renewable energy production within the year.
