SOFIA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian authorities have confiscated 356 kilograms of marijuana originating from the United States, the National Customs Agency (NCA) announced in a press release on Wednesday.
The illicit substance was discovered during an inspection of a parcel at a shipping company's warehouse in Sofia, according to the NCA. The shipment, declared as "automotive accessories," was intended to be redirected to another country.
However, a detailed customs inspection, prompted by a risk analysis, uncovered that the parcels contained boxes filled with vacuum-packed and sealed polyethylene bags stuffed with marijuana. To evade detection, the smugglers had sprinkled coffee on the bags to mask the scent from customs dogs, the agency said.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the case. ■
