ZANZIBAR, Tanzania, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Around 400 people in Tanzania's Zanzibar have benefitted from free medical services provided by a Chinese medical team stationed in the Indian Ocean islands.
On Thursday and Friday, local residents gathered at the Migombani community garden to receive medical clinical services offered by the 34th Chinese medical team. The services included respiratory ailments, gastroenterology, general surgery, urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, stomatology, and traditional Chinese medicine.
The Chinese medical team was invited by the Zanzibar Ministry of Health as part of the 61st anniversary celebrations of the Zanzibar Revolution, culminating on Jan. 12.
Despite the hot weather, the Chinese doctors worked in a simple conference room, providing health and specialist examinations, traditional Chinese medicine treatments, and distributing free medications to nearly 400 people from the community and surrounding areas.
Li Qianghua, consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Zanzibar, visited the medical team and praised their free clinic activities.
Mariam Khalfan, medical liaison officer for the Zanzibar Ministry of Health, expressed her sincere gratitude to the Chinese medical team for their continuous support of Zanzibar for over 60 years.
Khalfan said this free clinic showcased the medical technology and international humanitarian spirit of the Chinese medical team and strengthened the friendship between peoples of the two countries.
Since 1964, when east China's Jiangsu Province dispatched its first medical team to Zanzibar, 847 medical workers in 34 batches have provided medical services for some 8.3 million locals so far, according to the Jiangsu Commission of Health. ■
