ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa has inaugurated a modern sewage treatment plant capable of treating 30,000 cubic meters of sewage per day.
The Bole Arabsa Sewage Treatment Plant, which has increased Addis Ababa's sewage treatment capacity to 233,000 cubic meters per day, was inaugurated on Friday in the presence of senior Ethiopian government officials and Addis Ababa city administration representatives, among others.
Addressing the inauguration event, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie said that the newly operational sewage treatment plant will provide a modern sewage treatment system for more than 240,000 residents of Addis Ababa.
She said the facility is "a critical infrastructure with an overarching impact on creating a modern, clean, and healthier city."
"This treatment plant will modernize our sewage disposal system, addressing the long-standing need to make our city free of pollution and more convenient for its residents," Abiebie said.
Highlighting the plant's advanced technologies, which include a three-stage sewage filtration and treatment system, the mayor commended the contractor for completing the project efficiently and with high quality.
According to the Addis Ababa city administration, the plant's environmental protection benefits will enhance the city's socio-economic and political significance in Ethiopia and strengthen its role as a key tourist attraction in the country.
