The Martyrs' Day was a movement occurred in Panama on Jan. 9, 1964, when troops of the U.S. Army clashed with high school students who demanded the right to raise the national flag in the area known as Canal Zone, a strip of land around the Panama Canal, which was ceded to the United States of America in perpetuity as a result of the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty.
