SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's main liberal opposition Democratic Party on Tuesday filed a complaint with the police against an acting president over dereliction of duty.
The complaint was lodged with the National Office of Investigation (NOI) against Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok who became the acting president following the impeachment of both President Yoon Suk-yeol and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.
Lawmakers of the Democratic Party told a press conference that Choi neglected to prevent the presidential security service from destroying the judicial system by blocking the execution of a warrant to arrest Yoon.
The joint investigation unit attempted to arrest Yoon in the presidential residence last Friday, but it failed as agents of the security service confronted investigators proceeding with the arrest warrant against the impeached president.
Choi reportedly kept mum about the unit's request to order the security service to cooperate with the execution of the warrant, while taking no action towards the security service chief who failed to follow due process, the lawmakers noted.
The acting president had yet to appoint an independent counsel to investigate Yoon's martial law imposition, which was demanded by the National Assembly through the passage of a bill, while postponing the appointment of a constitutional court justice nominee and a supreme court judge nominee, according to the lawmakers.
Regarding the issue, Choi said in a cabinet meeting earlier in the day that it will be his duty as a government official to only fear the evaluation of history and people, properly judge for the country and act responsibly, reiterating his position in principle. ■
