LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Disney's photorealistic CGI-animated film "Mufasa: The Lion King" is the new box office king at the North American box office during the first weekend of 2025, collecting a solid 23.8 million U.S. dollars on its third weekend of release, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
The musical drama film has grossed 168.6 million dollars in North America and 476.4 million dollars globally through Sunday.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film is a prequel to 2019's box office hit "The Lion King," the remake of the 1994 animated film of the same name.
Paramount's action-adventure comedy film "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" slipped to second on its third weekend with 21.2 million dollars. The film now has a North American cume of 187.5 million dollars for a global total of 336.3 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, Focus Features' horror film "Nosferatu" took in 13.2 million dollars on its second weekend for a North American cume of 69.4 million dollars. ■
