RAMALLAH, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian was killed and eight others injured, including one critically, by Israeli army gunfire in a refugee camp in the northern West Bank city of Nablus on Friday, Palestinian authorities said.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said in a press statement that 18-year-old Mohammad Amer was killed by Israeli army in the Balata refugee camp.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said in a statement that its teams treated eight people with gunshot wounds during clashes in the camp. One was critically wounded in the chest and the others moderately wounded.
According to local sources and eyewitnesses, Israeli forces stormed the camp and deployed snipers on nearby rooftops, sparking intense clashes with Palestinian youths.
The Israeli army has not issued any comment on the incident.
Since Oct. 7, 2023, tensions have mounted in West Bank cities and refugee camps, resulting in the deaths of over 800 Palestinians due to Israeli gunfire and shelling, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. ■
