PHNOM PENH, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has issued a notice, calling on the public to be extra vigilant over counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes.
Signed by Kith Sovannarith, director general of the NBC's Banking Supervision, on Tuesday and publicized on Thursday, the notice said counterfeit U.S. dollars have been circulating in Cambodia.
The notice said to prevent the circulation of fake dollars and at the request of the U.S. Secret Service, the NBC allowed banks and financial institutions to confiscate any phony dollar bills from customers without compensation and send them to the U.S. Secret Service for a probe.
Sovannarith said banks and financial institutions were required to report the identity of the customer who circulates counterfeit dollars to the NBC.
"The public must be extra vigilant and scrutinize U.S. dollar banknotes thoroughly before accepting them," he said. ■
