ROME, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Italian Serie A side AC Milan has hired Sergio Conceicao as its new head coach on Monday, hours after his Portuguese compatriot Paulo Fonseca stepped down.
Former Roma coach Fonseca took over the coaching position of the Rossoneri this summer, but his side was criticized for inconsistency as AC Milan only ranks eighth in the league with a game in hand, while the seven-time Champions League winner had opened the European elites campaign with two consecutive defeats, but now is on a run of four consecutive wins.
According to some Italy's outlets, the club had already made the decision before the kick-off of AC Milan's Serie A game with Roma on Sunday which eventually ended with 1-1.
Conceicao had played for Lazio and Inter Milan as a professional, before he started his coaching spell with seven seasons on Porto's bench.
The 50-year-old has struck a deal that runs to June 2026 with his new club, and he is set to make his debut in the semi-final of the Supercoppa Italiana with Juventus on Friday. Curiously, Conceicao's son Francisco is in the Bianconeri's squad. ■
