OTTAWA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Canada's pipeline movements of crude oil from Alberta to British Columbia sharply increased by 436.1 percent year over year to 2.3 million cubic metres in October, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
This was the highest monthly volume since the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, the national statistical agency said.
The Trans Mountain pipeline carries crude oil from Alberta to the British Columbia coast. Its expansion, which opened May 1, tripled the capacity of the existing pipeline, adding an additional 590,000 barrels per day.
Production of crude oil and equivalent products rose 6.9 percent to 26.1 million cubic metres in October, marking the 13th consecutive monthly year-over-year gain, the agency said.
According to the agency, all types of crude oil production were up in October, but the overall increase was driven by oil sands extraction, which rose 9 percent to 17.3 million cubic metres.
Production of synthetic crude oil climbed 19.1 percent year over year to 6.2 million cubic metres in October, while production of crude bitumen rose 4.1 percent, reaching a new monthly record of 11.1 million cubic metres, said Statistics Canada. ■
