COLOMBO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has authorized the State Trading Corporation to import up to 30,000 metric tons of non-iodized salt to address the impending market shortage, a government spokesperson announced on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists in Colombo, cabinet spokesperson and Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the salt imports will be completed by Jan. 31, 2025.
Jayatissa said that although Sri Lanka is typically self-sufficient in salt production, recent months of rainy weather have caused a decline in output.
The government projects a salt shortage for both domestic and industrial use during the first quarter of 2025, prompting the decision to import salt, the minister added. ■
